I think the ritual is necessary to make sure the other person cant go anywhere. :p Not that it works much.
I guess its just a way to make it(the relationship) legal in the eyes of society. Otherwise, I agree, the marriage is done when two people have joined their hearts.

if so, the ritual too not at all needed..
the actual marriage is an identity of that love.. just an identity of the inner..
but the sad part is we nvr marry the one - whom we love!

Doesn't guarantee love forever. Both have to work for that. Or stay in that binding without love - in misery.
